Meet Bryan C. Hanks
![]()
Hi, there. I’m Bryan Hanks, the managing editor of The Free Press in Kinston, N.C., and the managing editor of The Jones Post in Trenton, N.C. For nearly six years, I was the sports editor of The Free Press, but I took over the new position on July 7, 2008.
I’ve worked for the Gaston (N.C.) Gazette, the Shelby (N.C.) Star and the Lincoln (N.C.) Times News. I’ve also free-lanced or strung for more than 30 papers, including the Chicago Sun-Times, the Charlotte Observer, the Raleigh News and Observer and the Winston-Salem Journal.
Within this blog, you will find out everything that’s going on in news, sports and entertainment in and around Kinston. You’ll get exclusive content and contests here that you can’t get in The Free Press or anywhere else.
It’s not going to all be about sports and news, though. From time to time, I’ll let you know what’s going on in my head — if it’s not too scary.
I’d like this blog to be sort of a poor man’s version of the genius — Steve Czaban’s — Web site. Czaban’s is the perfect Web log — he has everything on there a man loves (sports, women and columns). I suggest you check it out: it’s awesome.
Most of all, this blog is about you. I want to know what you think about sports in our area. Never hesitate to e-mail me at bhanks@freedomenc.com to let me know how to improve this blog or The Free Press.

Just for the record, shouldn’t ECU hire George Stackhouse as it’s head basketball coach? Doesn’t his track record as Kinstons head coach solidify him as a viable candidate to take over when the position becomes available again? This could also prove to be a smart move for the Pirates being that Kinston has a plethora of basketball talent and maybe more kids from the “K” would be willing to ball for the former Vikings coach.

Good Point! George Stackhouse was an exceptional coach for the Vikings as well as an exceptional man. At this point, I think ECU could use his help. Also having that Ktown connection is always a plus for ECU since they may be able to get dibs on the KHS talent as you pointed out!

Bryan,
I am a senior at UNC and I graduated from Jones Senior High School. I am writing my final paper for my African American Experience class on African American youth and what influences their choices about whether or not to go to college. I am focusing my paper centrally in Jones County and I interviewed students there. Ms. Murphy, a teacher at Jones Senior, showed me an article that you wrote in response to a letter that someone sent to you. I was wondering if you could email me a copy of that article or send me the link because I couldn’t find it and I want to include it in my paper to show negative opinions in the county. Any other help you can give me would be helpful. I need this information as soon as possible, although I am not trying to inconvenience you. Thank you for whatever help you are able to give.

Hey Chan! Hope you’re doing great. We don’t run full JV stories in the paper, although if the coach calls in, we’ll run a brief.

Mr. Hanks…can you do me a favor and delete my comments about the soccer team on the Craig Hill blog. I didn’t need to be bragging and I don’t want a fussing from the school. That’d be greatly appreciated.

How come Bill Ellis wants to have a county wide Rec baseball tournament? This is hurting our All Star teams because they will only have 10 days to practice before the district tournament. I see no reason to play these games since they will not benefit anyone in the county. The whole reason for splitting the county in half was to have stronger teams but this is hurting the teams for starting to practice. What do think Bryan?

Birdman — this is the first I’ve heard of it. I’ll look into it and get back to you…

Mr Hanks, Bev Perdue has been to Kinston on May 3, and June 18, and stops her often on her way to her home in New Bern. She was also at a reception at my house at Atlantic Beach this past Friday, where over 50% of those attending were from Lenoir County. Rob Bizzell

Mr. Bizzell — Thanks for the updates; I appreciate them. I have to realize that “news” happened before I took over this job (about three weeks ago)!

Yo, Bryan,
What ever happened with the situation concerning Larry Powell and those charges against him? I’ve heard different stories. I’ve also seen him, so I know he isn’t in jail serving any jail time. Just curious to see if you know anything.
Comment by VikingFan — August 20, 2008 @ 9:44 am
I was just checking for a response and I noticed you didn’t respond to mine. I was just wondering about the situation. I wished you could have responded just to say you wouldn’t respond.
Thank you
