High Point Christian overcame a sluggish start in its third-place Shavlik Randolph Foundation bracket game of the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational to defeat Oxford Webb, 65-52, Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (12-2) trailed 10-6 after one period but took control of the game in the second quarter by outscoring the Warriors (10-2), 23-13, to take a 29-23 lead. HPC, in its first HSOT, held Webb to only nine points in the third period and cruised in the final quarter to win third-place honors.
“This was a great bounce-back win for us against a good team,” HPC coach Brandon Clifford said. “In our last 46 games, we’re 42-4, so we haven’t lost a lot. I’m not saying that to brag, I’m saying that because we’re not used to losing games.”
The Cougars were led by Mike Kobani’s 22 points and 9 rebounds and Jackson Kent’s 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Webb, also in its first Holiday Invitational, was led by Tyrek Beverly’s 16 points and UNC recruit Isaiah Hicks’ 12 points and 8 rebounds. On Saturday, the Webb coaching staff wore pink shirts in memory of a friend of Warriors head coach Leo Brunelli, who lost a battle to breast cancer.
After the game, all the Warriors players wore purple T-shirts to honor a Webb student named Meghan Bunn, who is currently battling brain cancer.
Brunelli, whose voice shook with emotion while he explained the meaning of the shirts, showed appreciation for the Oxford and Granville County community that supported his team during its inaugural HSOT appearance.
“Thank you for making this possible by coming and supporting us,” Brunelli said. “What a great opportunity for our kids and community. We have the greatest fans in the world and I appreciate them.”
