HSOT Game 20: Waxhaw Cuthbertson 67, Holly Springs 54 (Summit fifth-place)

Just call the Cavaliers of Waxhaw Cuthbertson the “Comeback Kids.”

For the third straight game in the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational, the 2A Cavaliers rallied in the second half, this time to defeat 4A Holly Springs, 67-54, in the fifth-place game of the Summit Hospitality bracket of the HSOT.

In the Summit quarterfinals, Cuthbertson (11-1) overcame a 20-point deficit to force Hampton, Va., to overtime before losing. In the consolation semifinals, the Cavaliers shut out Kinston in the fourth quarter to win by three points.

And in Saturday’s fifth-place game, the Cavs trailed by six points at halftime before outscoring the Golden Hawks 43-24 in the second half.

“There was an eight-minute stretch there in the second half where I thought our defense really changed the game,” Cavaliers coach Mike Helms said. “We got a lot of steals and the big thing was, we held (Holly Springs) to one shot.”

Cuthbertson point guard Shelton Mitchell scored 18 points to lead the Cavaliers; he finished with 67 points in HSOT. Isiah Cureton added 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Luciius McMillon had 10 for the Cavaliers.

Holly Springs was led by 14 points from Anthony Doyle, 12 from Deejay Flippin and 10 from Craig McDaniel.

“I want to congratulate Cuthbertson; they’re a great team,” Holly Springs coach Thurman Jordan said. “They’re the type of team we’ll face that’ll make us better later in the season.”
