Apex overcame a slow start to roll past Clinton, 56-34, in an elimination game of the Shavlik Randolph Foundation bracket of the 2012 HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational.
The Cougars (7-5) trailed 11-7 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Dark Horses 49-23 the rest of the way to pave the way to the fifth-place game of the Randolph bracket Saturday at 12:40 p.m. Apex will face the winner of the Charlottesville, Va., Miller School-Wilson Greenfield game.
Apex forced 30 Clinton turnovers while only committing six to advance in the consolation bracket. The Cougars were led by 16 points and 4 assists from T.J. Evans and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Malik Williams. Ian Boyd added 11 points for Apex.
“We’re pleased to get a win today; we had a pretty horrendous first quarter,” Apex coach David Neal said. “I was pretty frustrated and uptight at halftime, but I think we settled down.”
Clinton (7-2), making its first appearance in the Holiday Invitational, was led by 9 points and 8 rebounds from Shian Bradshaw. The Dark Horses were eliminated from the HSOT with the loss.
“Congratulations to Apex; they’re a very well-coached team and very disciplined,” Clinton coach Randy Jordan said. “They have great heart and they’re very tough.”
