DEMOCRATS SCRAMBLING AFTER MCCAIN TAKES LEAD IN POLL

If you’re a Democrat and the San Francisco Chronicle says you’re in trouble, that’s a bad sign. Democrats are struggling to understand why their man, Barack Obama, is falling behind John McCain.

My take: Here’s why — Obama’s spiel (whatever it is, depending on the day) is not getting through because of his dependence on “feel-good” messages. If he wants to keep from falling behind further, he needs to start focusing on his message — again, whatever it is.

NFL UNION CHIEF GENE UPSHAW DIES OF PANCREATIC CANCER

Gene Upshaw, the NFL’s union chief and Hall of Famer from the Oakland Raiders, has died. Evidently, it was from pancreatic cancer — something Upshaw didn’t find out about until this past Sunday.

My take: The NFL players will miss Upshaw, who led the union since 1983. The players have certainly reaped the benefit of his counsel.

JESSICA SIMPSON PIMPING NEW “SMART” BEER

Yes, it’s true.

My take: A beer with vitamins in it; sort of like Vitamin Water with the potential to get a buzz. Wow.

The fact that Jessica Simpson is the spokesdorkperson for it makes it all that much more ironic. You think she’ll have Tony Romo drinking it?

What a world, eh?

  1. Hanks,

Did you hear ECU has declared war on cracker barrel? You can’t make this stuff up.

  2. Death of Upshaw is a huge story.

If you saw him play, you saw one of the NFL’s finest at his position. And finest regardless of position. He was a fine, fine football player.

But leading one of the nation’s most powerful unions for a quarter of century - that in of itself is one thing. (Not just powerful union in sports, but powerful among all unions in the country). Its an entirely different thing beyond that to take them from the wages they made when he got the job to where they are now. Then, its an entirely different thing beyond that to take them into the age of free agency. And then, its even an entirely different thing beyond that to take them into the salary cap era.

Amazing events unfolded under his watch. And what folks around the NFL will tell you is while he worked for the players’ union, he had the good of the game at the forefront as well. What an ultimate compliment.

Indeed, a sad day for football.

  3. Change we can believe in!!!!!!!

He talks about change, but never says what he is going to change.

    Obama can keep the change!

  5. Petey,

That’s his whole plan, speak in generalities, commit to nothing, change your position on an issue when the opinion polls tell you to. Welcome to an Obama-nation. What a joke, go get ‘em John.
