Standings after Week 19

In the penultimate week (Heelatious, that means “next to the last”) of our little competition for the regular bloggers,  COliver has taken a 2 1/2-game lead over Eastern and 5-game lead over me for overall first place.

It also appears that we’ll have a new champion for the first time in our four-year history of doing this little game; JWade, the three-time defending champ, had another tough week and is 14 games out of first.

Myself and Heelatious had the best weeks at 11-4.

Again, many thanks to my treasured, thoughtful, tremendous, terrific, tempting, tasteful, tap-dancing, tenacious, tricky, tan, trend-setting, tabulating, tireless, tactful, ticklish, tantalizing, teasing, thrilling, teddy bear-loving girlfriend for her help in putting this together.

Game 22 (tournament 2 third-place): Cary Panther Creek 60, Knightdale 46

Earnest Ross cemented a solid run through the 2008 GSK with a 23-point effort to lead Cary Panther Creek to a 60-46 victory over Knightdale in the third-place game of the Summit Hospitality 8-team bracket on Tuesday.

Ross, a 6-5 senior guard who has committed to Auburn, added six rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist to his impressive stat line in the victory.

He scored 79 points in the tournament, good for 29th overall in the GSK’s 37-year history.

“It was wonderful playing in the tournament, this being my third and final year,” Ross said. “It was a great experience sharing it with my fellow seniors.”

The Catamounts (12-1) broke a 10-10 tie after one quarter by outscoring the Knights 18-12 in the third quarter and 20-12 in the fourth.

Knightdale (9-5) was paced by Aaron Smith’s 12 points andd Josh Gorham’s 11 points. Other than that, the only bright spot for the Knights was Stanley Okoye’s 1,000th career point, which came late in the game.

“I feel like I’ve said this before, but we’re disappointed in losing the way we lost today,” Knightdale coach Battle Watkins said. “The other two games were close games, but today I didn’t feel like we hit on too many cylinders.”

Game 21 (tournament 1 fifth-place game): Apex Middle Creek 64, Rocky Mount 55

Rocky Mount had one star — senior forward Tashawn Mabry — on its roster in its GSK Shavlik Randolph Foundation fifth-place game.

Fortunately — for Apex Middle Creek, at least — the Mustangs had two in senior guards Garrius Adams and Tom Tankelewicz. Behind a combined 53 points from Adams and Tankelewicz, the Mustangs held off the Gryphons, 64-55, to earn fifth place in the Randolph fifth-place game.

“I was pleased with the way we played four quarters today,” Middle Creek coach David Kushner said. “I thought my kids responded well after having a shaky middle of the game.”

Adams finished with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Tankelewicz had 26 points to lead the Mustangs (10-2) to the victory.

“Those guys really stepped up and showed some senior leadership,” Kushner said of Tankelewicz and Adams.

Tankelewicz also hit 5 of 12 3-pointers to finish with 13 in his team’s three games in the tournament, tying the Glaxo record. He now shares the record with Matt Bonner (Concord, N.H., 1998) and Freddy Little (Bunn, 2004).

The Gryphons trailed throughout although they pulled to within a point on a couple of occasions in the game.

“I think we played it all out last night,” Rocky Mount coach Mike Gainey said of his team’s overtime win against North Mecklenburg in the consolation semifinals on Monday. “We couldn’t quite get our legs under us; they were kind of stiff.”

Mabry led the Gryphons (6-4) with 25 points and eight rebounds, while Alonzo Sharpe added 11 points.
