If you are, go to Charlie Kraebel’s blog at http://ckraebel.encblogs.com. He’s our News Editor and he needs a couple of fans to talk to for a story the news side is developing.
The game is in Durham on Feb. 7; who’s going to win?
I don’t have a dog in the fight, but I’d have to go UNC by 3 right now…
First of all — thank you to the hundreds of folks who came out today for the United Way Day of Basketball at Kinston High School. It was so good to see the community come together for a great time and for a great cause.
Congratulations to the doggoned Coaches team again…the Media team had a 28-28 tie but ended up getting beat 80-48.
Kinston’s Sherrod “Country” Croom defeated Kinston’s Marcus Hemby in the finals of the dunk contest, while Kinston super-freshman Reggie Bullock downed Kinston’s Curtis “Nootsie” Hines in the finals of the 3-point shootout.
The Hawk Krazees redeemed themselves with an impressive win over the Munn Maniacs in their game.
Again, thanks to everyone who came out. We raised right at $3,000 for the United Way and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks!
Kinston defeated Wilson Hunt tonight, 58-53. Curtis Hines was scoreless at halftime, but scored 11 of his 16 points in the FOURTH QUARTER to co-lead the team with Quinton Coples (who also had 16). The Vikings trailed by 11 points midway through the third quarter, but rallied in the fourth.
Throw the other scores of the other games up here! I’m filing this from the newsroom of the Wilson Daily Times (thanks, Paul Durham!).
Some more thoughts about tonight’s game:
Marcus Hemby looked good at times (four points, six rebounds), but he is RAW. You can tell he’s been away for a little bit. But I know the kid and I know this: he’ll be ready for the playoffs.
Gulledge started Bo Ingram, Miguel Starkey, the twins and Reggie Bullock tonight. The defensive starters paid off, holding explosive Hunt to only nine first-quarter points. But that lineup could only score six points in the first quarter. The twins really do set the tone defensively when they’re in the game, but their lack of offense hurts at times, too.
Bo finished with four points, all in the fourth quarter. He seems to be struggling a bit in his junior season, the most important in the college recruiting process. I still feel he’ll right himself though…
Quinton was an animal in the second half, scoring 14 of his 16 points. He’s hard to stop when he gets mad. And he got mad a couple of times in the second half.
Nootsie (Hines) has ice water running through his veins. He’s never seen a shot he’s afraid to take, and he makes most of them. You absolutely have to cover him, because if you don’t, you’re giving up 3 points. He’s also improved his defense and could be this year’s Michael Jenkins (Winthrop).
Reggie Bullock had seven points and nine rebounds. Folks, he’s a freshman. He’s also going to be an ACC-caliber player by the time he graduates.

Unfortunately, I haven’t voted in this poll yet this season, although I have been invited to do so; I will in the upcoming week. Special thanks to Deana King with NCPreps.com for putting this thing together; it’s a monster to do and she does a heck of a job with it.
Also, Greene Central’s boys are an honorable mention in the 2A poll and Jones Senior’s girls are an honorable mention in 1A poll.
Not only will you be able to see a Media vs. Coaches game at Sunday’s fifth annual United Way Day of Basketball, the best dunkers and 3-point shooters in our area and the Hawk Krazees-Munn Maniacs game, you have another treat in store if you come to Kinston High School at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
You’ll get to meet the two-time defending champion of the Blog Pick ‘ems: the infamous JWade.
That’s right, I’ll be giving the elusive and super-prognosticating JWade his valuable prize package at halftime of the Media vs. Coaches game.
And yes, it will mark the first time I’ve ever met the man, the legend. I’m looking forward to it.
Let me know what you think the final score of the Super Bowl is going to be. There might even be a valuable prize package (i.e., Free Press stuff laying around the office) involved, if I feel like it.
I’ve never done one of these, so you can even suggest rules for it.
Ah, heck, we’ll have something for the dude (or dudette) closest to the correct score.
I’ll post my prediction sometime next week.
Thought you might want a little historical perspective on who were the winners in the previous four years…
