Streak for the Cash March winner: Seth Jones (Beale St. Buc)

For the second time in our little contest, we had a tie atop the final Streak for the Cash; however, with the tiebreaker of winning percentage, Seth Jones — Beale St. Buc — won for the 10th time with 96 victories.

The 96 victories broke the old record of 91, which was set — ironically — by Seth and Deana in December 2009.

Also need to throw some serious props out to Seth and Deana, who finished nine games back of the national leader and were 26th in the nation overall!

Anyhoo — congrats, dude; email me at bhanks@freedomenc.com and we’ll get you a fabulous prize package.

Morning News Report; March 31, 2011

MLB SEASON BEGINS TODAY

It might not get much above 50 degrees outside today, but no matter — the boys of summer are back on the diamond today as the Major League Baseball season begins with games in New York and Washington, D.C.!

And don’t forget — the Kinston Indians’ 2011 season begins a week from tomorrow at Grainger Stadium.

My take: My quick picks for the 2011 season (not that I’m EVER right!):

NL East: Philadelphia; NL Central: Milwaukee; NL West: Colorado; NL Wildcard: San Francisco; NL Champion: Phillies

AL East: Boston; AL Central: Detroit; AL West: L.A. Angels; AL Wildcard: Texas; AL Champion: Boston

World Series champs: Phillies in 6. Yep, it’s chalk … but the Phillies have arguably the best pitching rotation in 30 years, IMO.

O.J. SIMPSON A ‘WALKING HEART ATTACK’

According to no better source than The National Enquirer, O.J. Simpson has gained 50 pounds and is on his way to a heart attack.

My take: And somewhere, Ron Goldman is laughing his head off.

GOOSE MISSING IN KINSTON

A woman is accusing a 71-year-old relative of stealing her pet goose in Kinston.

My take: To what depths have you fallen if you steal your relative’s goose? Wowzer.

P.S.: We’re having an exciting end to our monthly Streak For The Cash contest between Seth Jones and Deana Guido, as both entered today tied with 83 victories on this, the final day of March. ESPN is running a full-day of picks, so we might have a record month. Also, for the first time, I’m using a tiebreaker to determine first-place — whoever has the best overall percentage will be declared the winner, in case of a tie. Good luck, all!

Streak for the Cash February winner: D. Guido!

D. Guido last won in December 2009 — but took February with 71 victories, her second victory in our version of SFTC. DG held me off by two wins and Randy Capps by seven.

DG — contact me at bhanks@freedomenc.com and we’ll hook you up with a prize.

Streak for the Cash January winner: Beale St. Buc!

Just call it “Return of the Beale St. Buc!” Our good friend — and our winningest blog SFTC winner — Seth Jones won one of the most exciting blog contests ever, finishing with 81 victories in January. Seth held off B. Barrow (80) and D. Guido (79) by correctly picking Texas over Texas A&M in his final contest of the month.

It marks the ninth time Seth has won our little version of SFTC; he also won eight straight months (August 2009-March 2010). Dude, I’ll be back in the office in a couple of weeks and we’ll hook you up with something righteous.

Morning Sports Report; Sept. 7, 2010

Yep … I’m on vacation, but there are too many good sports stories out there not to have an MSR.

BOISE STATE HAS CLEAR PATH TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Boise State held off Virginia Tech last night in D.C., 33-30, in the season-opener for both teams.

My take: And it was pretty impressive victory, considering the Broncos gave up a 17-0 first quarter lead and were basically playing a road game with a rabid Hokies crowd cheering against them.

But that was the toughest game BSU will play until it plays for the national championship. Don’t believe me? Here’s BSU’s schedule:

At Wyoming; Oregon State; at New Mexico State; Toledo; at San Jose State; Louisiana Tech; Hawaii; at Idaho; Fresno State; at Nevada; Utah State. If BSU doesn’t win all those games by at least double digits, they deserve to fall in the rankings, in my opinion; the Broncos will certainly be favored by double digits in all those games.

Do I think Boise State should be the national champs? Why not? I just wish the Broncos had a comparable path to the title like an SEC or Big 10 team. When Boise State gets shmammered, 42-14, in the national title game by Alabama, Florida or Texas, don’t come whining.

BRADY, PATRIOTS CLOSE TO THREE-YEAR EXTENSION

Tom Brady is on the verge of signing a three-year extension worth $58 million with the New England Patriots.

My take: Is he worth $58 million? Probably not — but I equate his value to the Patriots the same way I do Derek Jeter with the Yankees; their intangibles are well worth the money they’ll spend.

Can you imagine Brady suiting up for the Denver Broncos or Detroit Lions or Jeter wearing the uniform of the Tampa Bay Rays or the Seattle Mariners? Neither can I — and the Patriots (or Yankees, for that matter) want that.

REGGIE BUSH TO BE STRIPPED OF HEISMAN

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that former USC and current New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush will be stripped of his Heisman Trophy by the end of September. If it happens, it’d be the first time in the 75-year history of the award a winner had lost his Heisman.

My take: And I don’t have a problem with it at all. You break the rules, you lose your award — simple enough.

And this is completely different from the O.J. Simpson situation – who I believe should be able to keep his (although he sold it in 1999 to help settle his civil case). Bush knowingly broke rules while he was in college; The Juice didn’t kill anyone until after he’d left USC. It’s not the Heisman Trophy for clean living after you leave college — it’s an award for your play (and keeping of the rules) while you’re in school.

P.S.: Streak for the Cash players, be sure to monitor the game all day; you can win $31,000 TODAY if you get the longest national streak from ESPN. It’s worth paying attention to for 31 Gs, eh? If you win, I want a cut!

P.P.S.S.: Congrats to Pirate Nation on that impressive win against Tulsa – I wasn’t there, but I was glued to a TV for the final five minutes of the game, and what a game it was! It was sweet that the final TD was ESPN’s top play of the weekend. And what the heck was the Tulsa coaching staff thinking when they called that final timeout? An excellent start to the season for Pirate Nation, although you better get that defense shored up!

P.P.P.S.S.S.: Speaking of great games — congrats to Tar Heel Nation for that showing in Atlanta on Saturday. Yes, LSU is down, but for the Heels to play as hard as they did with everything swirling around in Chapel Hill is a testament to their character. Makes you wonder what the final score would’ve been if UNC would’ve been at full strength. And big props to Kinston’s own Quinton Coples, who played his butt off — I think we could be seeing him play on Sundays in a couple of years, for sure.

Streak for the Cash August winner: Randy Capps

For the second time in four months, our good friend Randy Capps has won this blog’s Streak for the Cash competition. He did it in really incredible fashion, too, as he finished with 87 wins in August. The 86 wins is the second-best in our blog’s 19-month history; only the 91 wins turned in in the December 2009 tie between Seth Jones and Deana Guido has been a better month.

Randy, I guess this means we’ll have you in Kinston for another K-Tribe game — of course, we have to wait until next season (unless the K-Tribe makes the playoffs — which is very, very likely). Hopefully, there won’t be a broken nose this time!

Anyhoo — you guys need to get in on this fun! Go here to join our little troupe and try to knock the great Randy Capps off in September. You can also win $100,000 for the longest streak from ESPN or $2,500 for having the most wins in a month.
